10 Book to Movie Adaptations You Won’t Want to Miss
TIFF 2020, aka the Toronto International Film Festival, is underway! In the spirit of great films — and the books that inspire many of them — we’re swapping out tips on celebrity sightings for tips on where to find the best book to movie adaptations.
Here are the 10 movies we’re most excited about:
1. Nomadland
Release Date: September 11, 2020
Inspired by Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, Nomadland stars Frances McDormand as a houseless — not homeless — nomad working a string of seasonal jobs until she finds a community of like-minded individuals. Nomadland premieres at TIFF’s Lakeside Drive-in September 11th.
2. Inconvenient Indian
Release Date: September 12, 2020
Adapted from Thomas King’s 2012 best-selling non-fiction book, The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America, this documentary explores the historical and ongoing colonization of Indigenous peoples across North America. The film will be premiering at TIFF on September 12th at the TIFF Bell Lightbox and online through their digital cinema.
3. Concrete Cowboy
Release Date: September 13, 2020
Also coming to TIFF, Concrete Cowboy stars Idris Elba as an urban cowboy and Stranger Things’ Caleb McLaughlin as his estranged son, the pair navigating their relationship and life together in Philadelphia. The movie, directed by Ricky Staub, is adapted from Gregory Neri’s 2009 novel, Ghetto Cowboy.
4. True Mothers
Release Date: September 16, 2020
Based on the 2015 novel by Mizuki Tsujimura, True Mothers was selected for screening at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival and has made its way to TIFF! Starring Hiromi Nagasaku and Aju Makita, the story revolves around a couple and their adopted child who they raise as their own — until his birth mother comes back seeking reconnection.
5. The Devil All The Time
Release Date: September 16, 2020
Donald Ray Pollock’s psychological thriller The Devil All The Time is coming to Netflix, with Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson taking centre stage. Set in the corrupt town of Knockemstiff, Ohio, we see Holland, Pattinson, and others face off in a family saga that spans decades, all in southern gothic style.
6. Enola Holmes
Release Date: September 23, 2020
Another Stranger Things alumni, Millie Bobbie Brown, is taking the lead in the adaptation of Nancy Singer’s novel The Case of the Missing Marquess. Enola Holmes follows Sherlock’s younger sister as she forges a mystery-solving path of her own, searching for her missing mother in 1884 London, England. The movie will be hitting Netflix later this month!
7. Rebecca
Release Date: October 21, 2020
Based on the 1938 novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca will bring all the thrills and romance you need this October. This upcoming Netflix release stars Lily James and Armie Hammer as a newlywed couple enjoying the sweetness of marriage in their family estate — or they would be, if it weren’t for his ex-wife haunting them.
8. Death on the Nile
Release Date: October 23, 2020
Who couldn’t use a little more Agatha Christie in their life? Her 1937 thriller Death on the Nile is being brought to life through the talents of Kenneth Branagh, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, and more. The movie, set for theatrical release, is the follow up to the 2017 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.
9. Deep Water
Release Date: November 13, 2020
Need even more thrills? How about Deep Water, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name? Real-life couple (as of this writing) Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas star as husband and wife, who have opened their marriage to other lovers in an attempt to keep their family together. Which seems to be working, until those around them start winding up dead.
10. Dune
Release Date: December 18, 2020
This much-anticipated adaptation takes Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel to new levels, casting crowd-pleasing favourites like Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Timothée Chalamet in the story of a cross-galaxy quest set in the far future. Dune will be released in theatres in two parts, with the first film covering the first half of the book.
